Not for cosmetic work or a remodel that stays in the same footprint. You do need drawings, which usually means an architect or a licensed designer, when walls move, structure changes, square footage gets added, or the city requires a plan set for the permit. California does not require a licensed architect for most single-family work, but you do need competent drawings and a structural engineer when structure changes.
What the drawings actually buy you
A set the city can approve, a structural design where it is needed, and finishes and details coordinated before anyone builds. Good drawings are the cheapest way to avoid change orders, because every decision made on paper costs a fraction of the same decision made on site.
Design-build
For additions, ADUs and custom remodels we offer design-build: we bring in an architect or designer under one agreement, and price the design as it is being drawn. It avoids the common and expensive version where the drawings get finished, the bids come back 40 percent over, and the design starts again.
