Construction Hours in Los Angeles

When crews can legally start, when they have to stop, and what to do about the ones who do not.

In the City of Los Angeles, construction is generally allowed between 7am and 9pm Monday to Friday, and 8am to 6pm on Saturday. No construction is permitted on Sundays or major holidays. Surrounding cities are stricter: Beverly Hills, Santa Monica and West Hollywood all run narrower windows and tighter Saturday rules, so always check the city the property sits in.

Why it varies so much

Construction hours are set by local noise ordinance, not by state law, so every city writes its own. The City of Los Angeles is relatively permissive. The small cities surrounded by it, where houses sit close together and residents complain effectively, tend to be much stricter.

Beverly Hills in particular runs tight hours and limits weekend work. If your property is a Beverly Hills Post Office address, you are in the City of Los Angeles and the LA rules apply instead, which catches people out regularly.

What counts as construction noise

Most ordinances cover powered equipment, deliveries, demolition and anything audible at the property line. Quiet interior finish work is sometimes treated differently, but the safe assumption is that if a neighbour can hear it, the hours apply.

Separately, most cities cap construction noise at a decibel level measured at the property line, and some restrict the hours further for particularly loud equipment such as jackhammers and concrete saws.

How we handle it

  • We check the specific city's rules before the schedule is written, not after a complaint
  • Loud work, demolition, saw-cutting and jackhammering, gets scheduled in defined blocks rather than spread across the day
  • Neighbours either side get told when the noisy weeks are, in advance
  • Deliveries are timed so trucks are not idling outside at 7am
  • Crews do not start early just because the gate is open

Being the job that neighbours complain about costs real time, because complaints bring inspectors and inspectors bring stop-work orders.

If a neighbour's project is breaking the rules

Start by talking to the contractor on site, because most violations are habit rather than policy and stop when someone points them out. If that does not work, the City of Los Angeles takes noise and construction-hour complaints through 311, and other cities take them through their own code enforcement line.

Document it: dates, times, what the noise was. A log is far more effective than a single phone call.

Questions

Can contractors work on Sunday in Los Angeles?

Not in the City of Los Angeles. Some neighbouring cities permit limited quiet work on Sundays, but most do not. Assume no unless the city says otherwise in writing.

What about interior work with the doors shut?

Some cities treat genuinely inaudible interior work differently, but the ordinance is written around audibility at the property line. If it cannot be heard outside, it is rarely an issue in practice.

Are the hours different for emergency repairs?

Yes. Genuine emergency work, a burst main, a failed roof in a storm, an electrical hazard, is generally exempt. Routine work is not, and calling it an emergency does not make it one.

Do the rules change my schedule much?

On a tight-hours city, yes, by a week or two across a long project. We build it into the schedule at contract rather than discovering it later.
